Vietnamese Shaking Beef (Bò Lúc Lắc)

Intro

  • The Story: This is Han’s go-to food order when going out to eat with her now in-laws. Now that this dish has been perfected in the kitchen, it's a family favorite. Shaking beef or bo luc lac is a Vietnamese dish that consists of beef that has been cut into small cubes, marinated with soy sauce, fish sauce and oyster sauce, then sauteed in a wok with red onion and pepper before being served on a bed of fresh lettuce with slices of tomato and cucumber.

Ingredients

Beef Marinade

  • Beef: 1 lb beef ribeye cut into 1-1½" cubes (the bride recently used top sirloin and it worked great too)

  • Oyster sauce: 1 tbsp

  • Soy sauce: 1 tsp

  • Garlic minced: 1 tbsp

  • Garlic oil: 2 teaspoon

  • Sugar: ½ tsp

  • Corn or tapioca starch: 1 tsp

  • Vegetable Oil: 1 tbsp

Tomato Rice

  • Garlic minced: 1 tsp

  • Garlic Oil: 1 tsp

  • Unsalted Butter: 1 tbsp

  • Jasmine uncooked rice: 1 cup

  • Ketchup: 2 tbsp

  • Salt: 1 pinch

Sauteed Vegetables

  • Vegetable oil: 1 tbsp

  • White or yellow onion: ½ onion cut into large 1½" chunks

  • Bell pepper: 1 pepper, cut into large 1½" chunks

  • Green Onion: ½ stalk, cut into 2" pieces

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Marinate the beef

Combine all the ingredients and beef except for the cornstarch in a bowl and marinate for at least 1 hour.

Step 2: Prep the veggies

While this marinates, wash and prep all the veggies.

Step 3: Remove excessive liquid

Before cooking, transfer the beef to another plate to remove excess liquid and to come to room temp for about an hour.

Step 4: Coat the beef

Coat each piece of beef in cornstarch. Heat a pan on medium-high or high, then brown the meat on all sides in about 2-4 batches depending on the size of your pan

Step 5: Add the vegetables & stir fry

Once you have cooked all your beef, add them into a pan with the vegetables over medium-low heat, and stir for about 2 minutes. We recommend you add a tbsp of unsalted butter at the very end and toss everything together in the sauce.

Step 6: Plating

Plate the veggies and beef. Add some salt to taste.
